PHOS/Greek Light Painting Exhibition, July 13 – September 8

Phos Flyer 2016

Phos – Greek Light, an exhibit of Modern Greek paintings, will open at the Muses on Wednesday, July 13 at 6:00 PM.  Following the Colors of Greece 2015 art exhibition at the Muses of Southampton, New York, which made a powerful impression by promoting a positive and dynamic image of Modern Greece to the American public, this year’s Phos-Light features a fine selection of 45 paintings by 15 recognized contemporary Greek artists inspired by Greece’s eternal light – making it the largest group show of Modern Greek art in the United States.

Enchanted with their native land’s radiant light and fascinated by its expressive potential, the painters seek to capture the essence of the Hellenic experience and transform it into a personal vision, evoking a sense of divinity and Apollonian ethos. The Greek light reflected in their work is something they constantly find within themselves – in the past from which they hail and the present where they belong.

Either exploring the acute luminosity of the sunlight that bathes the Greek landscape or capturing the spiritual light that emanates from within like a Byzantine icon, their canvases speak about the artists’ lifelong fascination with the magic of painting and the miracle of light.

While using a contemporary artistic vocabulary, the painters featured in the Phos-Light exhibition invest new sensibility intotheir age-old heritage and embrace tradition as a vibrant source of life, combining the wisdom of the past with the promise of the future.

The Phos-Light exhibition, which will be held right after Art Hamptons, is organized under the auspices of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Hamptons and will take place at the Muses, 111 Saint Andrews Road, Southampton, next to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, from July 14 to September 8, 2016.

Entrance is free and during opening hours there will be concurrent activities to engage the visitors and help promote the exhibition.
