As many of you know, Halki Seminary is the Theological School of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Halki, is critically important to the Orthodox Church and has been forcibly closed for more than 40 years. The forced closure of Halki is one of many ways in which Turkish Government curtails religious freedom and refuses the religious rights of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and of Orthodox Christians.

When President Barack Obama met with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, he noted that he was “pleased to hear of his decision to reopen the Halki seminary.” Yet Turkish officials have since stated that negotiations on the reopening of Halki are “stuck” and have indicated that there is no intention to reopen the theological school.
